Jonahsa Foundation Inc. Condemns Sexual Harassment, Mob Violence Against Young Woman at Red Light

Jonahsa Foundation Inc. has condemned the alleged sexual harassment and mob attack against a young woman at Red Light, calling the incident a serious abuse of human rights and human dignity.

The incident reportedly happened on Thursday afternoon in the busy Red Light commercial area. A video shared widely on social media showed a young woman, believed to be in her 20s, being stripped naked and publicly harassed by a crowd. She was allegedly attacked because some people claimed she was wearing revealing clothes without underwear.

In a statement released Friday, Jonahsa Foundation’s Chief Executive Officer, Jonah Barcon, expressed serious concern over the way the young woman was treated. He described the act as public humiliation and a clear violation of her dignity.

Jonahsa Foundation Inc., a nonprofit organization that supports more than 500 underprivileged children across Liberia, including over 200 girls, said no woman should be attacked or shamed because of how she dresses.

“The attack on her dignity and her right to control her own body is unacceptable,” the organization said.

Mr. Barcon stressed that no woman or girl deserves to be harassed, assaulted, or abused because of her appearance or clothing choice. He warned that blaming victims because of what they wear only encourages harmful beliefs and makes violence against women and girls seem normal.

According to the Foundation, the incident shows the urgent need for more public education on gender rights, consent, respect, and non-violence.

The organization also called for stronger support for Comprehensive Sexuality Education in schools and communities. It said such education can help young people understand personal boundaries, gender equality, responsible behavior, and the importance of consent.

Jonahsa Foundation further urged parents, community leaders, schools, religious institutions, youth groups, and policymakers to work together to promote respect, tolerance, and protection for women and girls.

“Violence should never be justified in the name of morality or culture,” the Foundation noted.

The organization also called on the authorities to carry out a full investigation and ensure that those responsible are held accountable under the law.

Jonahsa Foundation urged the public to reject mob justice, sexual harassment, and all forms of gender-based violence. It also called for safer communities where women and girls can live without fear, abuse, intimidation, or public shame.
