President Boakai Boosts Liberia–Japan Partnership at TICAD 9
At TICAD 9, President Boakai and JICA President Dr. Tanaka agreed to expand cooperation in farming, infrastructure, healthcare, and youth skills. Japan reaffirmed its support for Liberia, while Boakai pushed for projects aligned with his ARREST Agenda and more focus on rural development.
President Joseph Nyuma Boakai met with Dr. Tanaka Akihiko, head of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), during the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 9). They talked about strengthening Liberia’s partnership with Japan.
President Boakai thanked Japan for its continued help in roads, farming, and healthcare—key areas for Liberia’s recovery. He said Japan’s support should follow his ARREST Agenda, which focuses on food security, infrastructure, clean energy, and skills development. He also called for the LIBRICE rice farming project to reach more regions and encouraged more Japanese investment in rural communities.
Dr. Tanaka praised Boakai’s people-first vision and promised stronger support in training young people, improving rural areas, and healthcare. Current JICA projects in Liberia include the Japan Freeway expansion in Monrovia, modern rice farming through LIBRICE, and better health services in Montserrado.
Both leaders agreed to deepen cooperation and grow Liberia–Japan relations.
