One Killed, Several Hospitalized’…Disaster Agency Reports On Gas Explosion

The National Disaster Management Agency has disclosed that at least one person has been reported dead due to an explosion that occurred at the Mira Gas Compound, along the Japanese Freeway. Speaking Tuesday, September 16, 2025 at the Ministry of Information’s regular press briefing, the Executive Director of the National Disaster Management Agency, Ansu Dulleh said they have been working in collaboration with the Liberia National Fire Service, Liberia Immigration Service, Liberia National Police, and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) since the incident occurred.
According to him, their preliminary findings show that 38 individuals were within the compound at the time of the explosion. Twenty-one were directly affected by the blast, of whom 20 have been admitted to the John F. Kennedy Medical Center and other clinics in Monrovia.
“Sadly, we received reports just moments ago that one of the victims, identified as Abraham Anawie, a Lebanese national, has succumbed to his injuries,” he told reporters. He said many survivors are in critical condition, some may lose their sight; others may face long-term physical disabilities, while many are experiencing severe breathing difficulties and burns.
He said the tragedy highlights once again the danger of situating heavy industrial operations in densely populated communities. Dulleh said they and other relevant government institutions will immediately begin inspecting and enforcing compliance across all similar facilities in the country.
According to him, as an agency responsible for disaster management, their duty is not only to respond but also to mitigate risks, prevent negligence, and protect the lives of our people. What we witnessed yesterday was heartbreaking. Furthermore, the Disaster Agency Executive Director revealed that survivors were terrified, many disoriented, and families have been left devastated, calling on Liberians to pray for the victims and their families during this difficult period. Meanwhile, he said the NDMA is holding the managers and operators of the company accountable under the laws of Liberia.
